Beginning Phase 4:

The most important part of this phase will be creating my project proposal document. This document will feature all the necessary breakdowns of the project it's requirement and how I will approach its development.

Project Proposal :

Additionally, within this section I will create an additional presentation for music students, with a focus on what opportunities they have for sound design, if they are interested in collaborating.

​

The project proposal document will not be an extensive document that features every bit of work, but instead a concise and summarized conclusion of all research conducted. The document will not feature prototyping as explicitly as it is demonstrated on this website (see prototyping under phase 3), but will feature scheduling and planning for semester 2 and the project's duration.

Idea Refinement

In order to create a strong project proposal, it is important to fully understand my project's aims, intentions and features.

​

I was luck enough to participate in a mini-game jam event on the 9th of December, where I met some very interesting and knowledgable people. I shared my concept with them and discussed many different aspects of the game.

​

Here are some key things I took away:

​

  • My game, being set in a real nuclear disaster, creates ethical and social questions regarding fun and grief within the game.

    • Balancing the ethics - appropriate levels of death and devastation vs parkour and gameplay.

    • Motive - sets tone of narrative

      • The motive is to show devastation and create an adrenaline survival instinct environment simulating the real collapse of the Fukushima Nuclear Reactor

    • How will different age groups perceive/participate in the narrative?

  • Potentially adding a personal story - based off personal accounts of people who were there, could make it more sensitive and less risk of being misconstrued.

    • Additionally, having different forced limitations put upon the player can create different experiences with variety.

      • Variety is important as it both make the game more interesting and also gives different experiences which makes the game more inclusive.

      • An example could be injuring the protagonist during one of the stages, forcing them to have limited movement.

  • What imagery to include?

    • Animals - fish, wildlife in forest nearby?

    • Flooding (trees and homes submerged)

    • Local monument ?

    • Fire, Smoke, Water- radioactive waste

    • Death - animals? People?

    • Story - newspapers/locket with photo? Wallet with photo?

Aim

​

The aim of the game is to simulate the Fukushima nuclear disaster as accurately as deemed necessary to highlight the devastation of the event as well as create an adrenaline - filled survival instinct environment. Through the medium of a game, I want to show to the player how truly devastating nuclear power can be if it is not able to be controlled, whilst encouraging creative survival instinct thought processes - to escape the environment. Also, I want to make the game encourage reflective thinking about nuclear energy, and how it can affect the environment; what alternatives do we have? Are they safe?
